Making it work: a guide to whole system commissioning for sexual health, reproductive health and HIV

Public Health England (PHE) published a guide to the commissioning of sexual health, reproductive health, and HIV services.  MEDFASH worked as PHE’s project delivery agent to develop the guide.

Commissioning responsibilities for sexual health, reproductive health and HIV have undergone major changes with the health and social care reforms and are now located across NHS England, local authorities and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). Making it work: a guide to whole system commissioning for sexual health, reproductive health and HIV  focuses on pulling the whole system together and is designed to complement existing guidance.

Produced in partnership with NHS England, the Local Government Association, the Association of Directors of Public Health, and the Department of Health, the guide aims to support all those commissioning sexual health, reproductive health and HIV services in the new environment.  It highlights the importance of putting service users and their needs at the heart of commissioning to ensure they experience integrated, responsive services, and emphasises the importance of tackling the wider determinants of health.

To develop the guide for PHE, MEDFASH undertook a review of documentation, a series of interviews and two stakeholder workshops.  Input was also received from an expert advisory group set up by PHE, the organisations and individuals which responded to an opportunity to comment on the draft guide before publication, and a Steering Group which oversaw the work. Throughout the project, the MEDFASH team worked closely with PHE.
